Market Dynamics Report: NVIDIA's Dominance and Emerging Challenges
Market dynamics and intelligence dossier....
Increased competitive pressure from agile challengers and evolving supply chain demands pose the primary market risk for Ezra Made Manufacturing.
INTERVIEW BY BHASKAR SUNKARA >In Abundance, Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson argue that administrative bloat is strangling America’s ability to build homes, clean energy, and public goods. Klein spoke with Jacobin’s Bhaskar Sunkara about what this means for the Left — and for any politics serious about governing. BHASKAR SUNKARA >Can you define “abundance” and what makes it distinct from other strains of progressivism? EZRA KLEIN >Abundance is the argument that a lot of what is wrong in our society is that we have manufactured scarcities. We have made it too hard to build and create the things people need more of. The places where we focus in the book are housing, clean energy, and state capacity. >New Deal liberalism was very much about the rapid creation of things that the working class needed in the physical world. But that growth machine became reckless — building highways through communities, despoiling rivers and streams, cutting down forests — and it created a backlash in the form of the New Left. And that was fair. There needed to be ways for people (and ultimately nonprofits) to sue and make sure their voices were heard. >But the solutions of one era become the problems of the next. Those procedures became overgrown. So now you have insane outcomes, like laws that are designed to make sure we have a cleaner environment being deployed against the development of solar panels and transmission lines and congestion pricing. Or the fact that in places like California and Washington, DC, it costs a lot more to build affordable housing than to build market-rate housing. >That’s why someone like Zohran Mamdani got interested in Abundance, because his plan for housing is a plan to build a lot of public housing. But you’re not going to be able to build enough public housing under the current rules and regulations that we use. BHASKAR SUNKARA >What role do you see for redistribution in your vision of abundance? EZRA KLEIN >**I would like to see a lot more redistribution. But Abundance isn’t meant to be a book about every problem.** Abundance is about the specific puzzle of Gavin Newsom beginning his governorship by saying he wanted to build 3.5 million new homes in California and falling far, far, far short. Abundance is about why we never got high-speed rail, even though Californians voted to fund it and the federal government kicked in billions under Barack Obama. Abundance is about the reality that we cannot build enough clean energy infrastructure to meet the climate goals that virtually everyone on the Left believes we should meet under the laws we currently have. >Abundance is about this category of goods that government has lost the ability to deliver on even when the people who want to deliver in that way win power. **That doesn’t take away from the need for redistribution. But if you have taxed rich people to build something and you can’t build the thing, that is going to erode faith in your politics over time.** BHASKAR SUNKARA >Are there more tensions with “predistributional” forces like labor standards and unions? EZRA KLEIN >**I don’t see it as opposed to labor standards or a high minimum wage or unions. I support sectoral bargaining. I support, in most places, a significantly higher minimum wage. But we can’t make public projects uniquely unaffordable and slow to build.** >The thing that people to my left should really grapple with is this: If you want to build public housing or clean energy, then one definition of successful left governance would be to build enough of those two things. So what do you think needs to be changed to get there? Can you do it if it can cost you more than a million dollars to build a unit of affordable housing — as has happened in DC? Can you do it if it takes a decade or longer to lay down an interstate transmission line? >I think it’s fine to say that the backbone of your strategy is going to be public and not private, but then you have to grapple with how to deliver public projects affordably and fast. That’s where the rubber on this meets the road. >I think that we are seeing, between the Green New Deal left and things that are in Jacobin, the emergence of a left that wants to build a lot. I’m just not sure it’s really grappled with the fact that government, as it is currently set up, is not really able to do it — sometimes because of corporate power and moneyed interests but sometimes because there are so many rules and concessions that government itself simply can’t act agilely. >That creates a broader problem: When the state can’t deliver, people stop believing in collective solutions altogether. If you don’t increase the supply in the thing the state is subsidizing, you get lines. You get rationing. You get denials. You get delays. You get high costs. And people are going to be furious at you. >One of the most effective attacks on basically any form of ambitious expansion of social insurance or things the government does is the belief that if the government does it, it’s going to lead to shortages. You can see this with people imagining that Mamdani’s five state-run grocery stores will somehow create Soviet-style groceries. >**Creating a left that people don’t fear — because what they’re really afraid of is that the government will run things badly — is very important. But that means being both angrier about government failures and more curious about them than even the Right is.** BHASKAR SUNKARA >As you mentioned, Zohran embraced some of your ideas from Abundance during his mayoral campaign. What did you think about his campaign’s key policy demands? EZRA KLEIN >I think he’s somebody who wants the government to deliver, and he’s been sufficiently involved in government that he sees how difficult it is. He also sees how poisonous it is when it fails. So his embrace of parts of the Abundance critique wasn’t surprising to me. And it’s not just him. Bernie Sanders got asked about Abundance, and I laughed when I saw him describe it as not an ideology but just “common sense.” Here’s more Bernie: >*Look, if the argument is that we have a horrendous bureaucracy? Absolutely correct. It is terrible. Over the years, I brought a lot of money into the state of Vermont. It is incredible, even in a state like Vermont — which is maybe better than most states — how hard it is to even get the bloody money out! Oh, my God! We’ve got 38 meetings! We’ve got to talk about this. Unbelievable.* >I don’t think you want the leading democratic socialists to view government this way! And that means you need to change it. >But institutional renewal is always really hard. The New Deal was hard. What the New Left did was hard. Every three or four or five decades or so, you have to take stock of the ways in which your institutions and your laws may no longer match your problems and your needs, and begin the hard and sometimes ugly work of stitching them back together.
https://www.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/comments/1p16caa/abundance_and_the_left_text_of_the_jacobins/I've been trying to reconcile the idea that authoritarianism is here with Ezra's column on the night Kirk was murdered, and the backlash to the latter, along with a bunch of other events in the past month that really show we're in a new political landscape. And I think I've really got something with the idea of "Total Culture War." [Total War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_war) describes existential wars where all of society is turned towards battle against another society. [Military History Online](https://militaryhistoryonline.com/General/TotalWarRedefined) defines it as "a type of warfare in which there are no limitations on the methods or means employed to ensure victory." I also liked [this definition](https://fiveable.me/key-terms/hs-honors-us-history/total-war): "Total war is a military strategy that involves the complete mobilization of resources and people, aiming to achieve total victory over an enemy by targeting not just the opposing military forces but also the economic and civilian infrastructure that supports them." I think the weird discrepancies we've seen between the Trump administration and a normal fascist military takeover are best explained like this: Republicans are not trying to implement a military dictatorship., But they are elevating the culture war to the level of total war. Everyone across society is being told "you are either with us or against us." Every institution is under attack and the Republican party is trying to absorb them into a cultural war machine to further empower themselves. And there is no limitation on what they are willing to do to achieve it: mass deportations, revoking citizenship, sending the army into your city, declaring Jimmy Kimmel antifa and imprisoning him; anything. It's total war within the society where the "old" culture of white supremacy, christian nationalist patriarchy has basically lost control of the majority and the future as [young Americans turn back against them](https://archive.ph/uMmhu). In that context, the backlash to Ezra this last week makes more sense to me. The best critique I've heard is that Ezra is naive to think that Kirk's efforts on college campuses were anything other than the manufacturing of consent for Kirk's policies: that there's no real persuasion happening, just clip-farming for propaganda purposes. Ezra's classically liberal view that there is a common space where both sides work together to accomplish their own goals doesn't apply if we're at total culture war and this astroturf campaign is just another enemy attack. In that case the sin of Tyler Robinson is to not understand that its a culture war instead of an actual war: political violence is only justified in so far as it advances one side's culture. Random violence is just a waste of resources. The Republicans' behavior is exactly that. Their blindness to the assassin in Michigan or the neo-nazi that shot up his school on the same day as Kirk's death is because those don't advance their culture war. The way that they backed down somewhat as the possibility of Tyler Robinson being another far right shooter gained attention shows it too. Ezra's Kirk op-ed compares incredibly unfavorably to an argument from a streamer called Mike-from-PA. To summarize it: lefties should confidently be wrong about Robinson being a groyper, because there is enough evidence that the theory is defensible and even if it turns out to be wrong later, its strategically better to have been wrong early to stop the republican narrative that it was time for war on leftists. That strategy seems to have worked to my eyes, weakening Ezra's argument. If the truth is a common space where both sides meet in agreement, it may be a dead-man's land between the two sides. So the key question now is **does victory lie in destroying the other side's cultural viewpoint or in rebuilding a common space where the majority safely resides?** One historical narrative I can imagine is that this is the last gasp of the white supremacy, patriarchical christian nationalism the country was founded on before being replaced by a baseline multicultural cosmopolitan culture that matches the demographics of the country. The other historical narrative I can imagine is that ethnic tribalism is the default viewpoint that every society devolves into unless you educate each generation into knowing there's something better, and therefore it can never be destroyed. I am inclined toward the latter view, and ultimately supported Ezra's common-space project as a result. But this last month has definitely made me question it. I think people like me have to reckon seriously with the idea that they are coming for us, and what victory in such a total-war scenario really means...
https://www.reddit.com/r/ezraklein/comments/1nk0hyh/total_culture_war/Tech bros and Abundance Democrats are now calling people who oppose data centers "AI populists". Coined by former Substack PM Jasmine Sun, it paints data center organizers as technically misguided and motivated more by a hatred of the tech elite than by material concerns. From her Substack article "[No Data Centers in My Backyard](https://jasmi.news/p/no-data-centers-in-my-backyard)": >I still felt that I did not really understand the data center backlash, and was slightly skeptical of the one-sided national news. New closed-loop cooling systems use about as much water as a golf course. Factories and power plants are just as ugly and much more polluting. Construction opposition is usually highly localized—build it, just somewhere else—so what made data center activism such a nationwide phenom? >My conversations \[with data center organizers\] make me wonder if the technical content of data center deals is mostly beside the point. Closed-loop cooling systems? “I don’t believe them.” Paying millions in taxes? “I don’t believe them.” Creating a thousand jobs? “I don’t believe them.” I hear a reflexive skepticism of every claim. >Water consumption and air pollution is generally minimal, but there are exceptions. In a vacuum, most people would choose to live by a flower field over a data center. But these costs are not so different from other industrial developments like manufacturing or solar farms. Those don’t go up without dissent, but have not commanded the shared hatred that data centers have. As [this response piece points out](https://www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/data-center-backlash), the irony of calling data center organizers non-technical is that the piece itself falls for the propaganda of "closed loop cooling", which sounds like a nice idea in theory but actually increases the total systemic water consumption by placing more demand on power plants, which consume a greater share of water. "Thousands of jobs" is also misleading, since most jobs created from data centers are temporary construction jobs. Despite these technical mistakes, the Substack article was recently platformed by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson (among others). I do believe Sun may have had good intentions in trying to understand the perspectives of people outside of Silicon Valley (I wish more techies did this!), but having also worked in tech previously myself I've been around too many AI bros to know that dismissing others as "non-technical" or irrational (see: EA) is a classic example of hubris.

https://www.volkskrant.nl/economie/aandeel-asml-fors-onderuit-na-berichten-over-chinese-doorbraak-in-chipmachines~b1463579/Narrowed down between OlaHealth, Pomegranate and Ezra. OlaHealth is $350 for 3 month starter kit. I was looking at VitalRx w/Glycine but open to Drug Crafters. Seems like VitalRx has better reviews- my concern is the 8.5mg/mL for 2mL vial, but love that it is a 6 month expiration and 503b pharmacy. That just seems like a lot of fluid. I've had to do Lovenox injections and \*hated\* it (tho that was probably more fluid). Ezra is $350 for 3 month starter kit, using BPI. I know BPI is no longer manufacturing, so this could be iffy. I would like to be able to stick with one place as much as possible, and the other pharmacies they have are much more expensive. But also know it's the "gold standard". I wish I knew what mL the bottles are tho. 10mg/mL is ok. Pomegranate is also $399 for 3 month starter kit via Hallandale. I like that it is not mixed with anything. There's also Fifty410 with their $399 starter kit, but doesn't tell me which pharmacy. I feel like Apothecary would be best "bang for buck" mg/mL & vial size, but that is just looking at the numbers and could mean nothing. I know that they all tend to increase the price after the starter kit, and even with that Olahealth still seems like the best price for stability, just not sure about the vial size/dosing. Even with the handy guide, that part is confusing for me. Personal History Reference: I have had WLS (Duodenal Switch) in 2019 which helped me lose 160+lbs but also have PCOS/PMOS. This has seemingly made regain much easier than anticipated and re-losing as hard as it was before surgery, despite the malabsorption. I have been stuck for over a year and would like to lose \~20-30lbs as well as get the anti-inflammatory & PCOS/insulin benefits. I am a little concerned about the gastric motility and the fact that the DS dictates a higher-fat diet. The body needs dietary fat (otherwise you risk the brain), when your body is altered to only absorb \~20% of fats... you can't restrict them. Butter & cheese on veggies, add cheese and sauces to entrees when possible (sauce also helps get dry foods down). Anyway, I hope this is allowed. I'm sorry if it's not.

https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/IF/PDF/IF10609/IF10609.12.pdfA lot of people here are Noam Chomsky fans or have heard of him and know of his famous book "Manufacturing Consent". The details of his argument from the 70s would be different in today's media environment, however the general idea of structured media bias controlling public opinion still applies. And in the US, that structured bias favors Israel to an overwhelming degree. Unless you are a young person who mainly only consumes news from very leftwing youtube channels and other media sources, it's difficult to escape. It's so pervasive, that most people don't understand how indoctrinated towards Israel they really are. Discussing stereotypes of races and ethnicities can often lead to discussions of racism, however it simply is true that Jews on average are intelligent and hardworking people. They often succeed. In fact, most minorities have been persecuted at one time or another in the history of the world, but one reason Jews have been persecuted frequently is because they often succeed and become an easy target for the majority in difficult times. But now, thankfully, we live in times where the establishment of western democracies discourage most forms of discrimination. It's not a conspiracy. But there are many more billionaires, successful people, and money supporting Israel than the Palestinians, and that money makes a difference. That combined with recency of the holocaust creates a synergistic environment of influence to favor Israel. It simply is a fact that the Germans killed millions upon millions of non-Jews as well, but you rarely hear about that in the US. There are also numerous other genocidal situations in the world over the last several hundred years, but the average US citizen couldn't name any of them, whereas the Holocaust is almost a household word. A lot of the older generation in the US see Israel as a goodwill story of a persecuted people who stood up for themselves to create their own security. If you criticize Israel, you're often immediately labeled an antisemite. It's a delicate subject for sure, but in the last several decades it's almost turned into a "cancel culture" type atmosphere where a normal person could risk losing their job if they speak up for Palestinian rights in the wrong situation. If any politician speaks out about Israel, AIPAC is ready to spend unheard of amounts of money to primary them. Most of our attitudes on issues develop through a combination of causes, but the media we are exposed to is absolutely one of the most important causes, if not the most important. And the Israeli bias in the US media is absolutely pervasive. I see it in this subreddit and most of the MSM constantly. For example, Arafat's actions during the Camp David meeting.... The traditional narrative is that he rejected everything and launched the 2nd intifada shortly after. I've seen this posted in the subreddit, I heard it on Fareed Zakaria's CNN show last weekend. But that's simply not what happened. What happened is that Israel made an offer for a Palestinian state that in many ways was a state similar to what Gaza is today. Arafat rejected the offer as ridiculous. Clinton made a counter proposal which Arafat and his Israeli counterpart both accepted with provisions. They kept negotiating until the new Israeli elections changed governmental leaders and those leaders chose not to negotiate. The 2nd intifada did start at some point after, but Palestinians kept trying for a two-state solution. Because Israel wouldn't engage, proposal after proposal was submitted to the UN. The US vetoed all of those proposals. Or the creation of Israel... That's often portrayed as another time Palestinians rejected the two-state solution. But what really happened? At the time of Israel's creation, the Jews made up 30% of the area's population, but owned less than 10% of the land. Jews had been migrating to the area under different conditions since the 19th century as part of the Zionist movement, and that migration accelerated during and after WWII. In the first half of the 19th century, the Jewish population in the land was about 2%. The UN proposed a solution where Jews got 52% of the land and Palestinians 48%, despite Palestinians controlling the majority of the land and being the majority population. Would you accept that? And the UN also had no means to enforce their proposal, so there was a war, and eventually the land was simply taken by force. I listened to Ezra Klein's AMA podcast recently where he discussed his personal views on the situation. I usually agree with Ezra on most subjects, but on this, at times he almost goes off the rails. In that podcast he asserts the "right to return" is often an unrealistic Palestinian goal and while it depends on your definition of that term, I largely agree with him. But later in the same podcast, he asserts Jews have a right to that land because of their ancestral roots. Those two ideas are not reconcilable. You can't assert Jews have a right to return the land they left 2,000 years ago while Palestinians have no right to a land they lost via violence 80s years ago. But he does because of an innate, pro-Israel bias. The entire conversation is dominated by a pro-Israel bias both from pro sympathy because of relatively recent persecution of Jews, and the assertion that Israel is a civil, more advanced, western Democracy. But that is not how Palestinians see the issue, nor much of the middle eastern world. The idea that the Jews returned to their homeland after 2,000 years is largely false in that Israel is mostly filled with European Jews who likely have less genetic connection to the Jews who lived there thousands of years ago than the current Palestinians. Yes, many Jews left 2,000 thousand years ago, but not all, and the ones that stayed probably became Muslim. For god's sake, today's Palestinians are obviously much phenotypically closer to the Jews of 2,000 years ago than today's Israeli citizens, a fact that gets ignored because it's inconvenient for Israel's preferred narrative. The Palestinians and much of the middle east see Israel as European colonizers, similar to Britain and the Ottomans before them. They are upset their land was taken and they currently live in a refugee state. It's not very complicated. Painting the narrative that the Palestinians and other middle eastern Muslims hate Israel simply because they're Jewish is a pro-Israeli narrative that hides the sins of the past and paints Israel as the innocent victim. Yes, most of these middle eastern countries are 2nd world authoritarian states where any minority can be persecuted, but the fact is you just don't see them obsessing over Christians the way they do about Israel... Because the Christians aren't currently occupying the land they recently controlled and forcing them into refugee-like status. Israel says out loud they will not consider a two-state solution so the perspective is the few times Israel seriously considered it and it didn't work out, the blame goes on the Palestinians for not taking advantage of their chance, a perspective stemming from extreme Israel bias. Any violence the Palestinians commit... the cause is their barbarisnism rather than their persecution. Much of the media ignores the circumstances of their Palestinian living conditions. In Gaza, their borders are controlled by Israel with limited movement. They don't control their own resources, utilities, or food. For god's sake Israel rations their food supply. The fact that they have education and health care is a minor miracle. I would say you are being dishonest if you think any people raised in those conditions would not grow up with animosity for Israel. I don't condone violence in any way, but much is made of the hostages taken from Israel.... I personally believe Hamas should return them... but since the conflict began Israel has detained 3,000 people from the West Bank alone. That's a crazy number and these people will basically have no fair adjudication system, they're basically hostages as well. But the western media largely ignores this story. Hamas' original charter was born in anger and horrific... and you hear it quoted continuously, but the fact that they admitted the charter was too much and revised it is completely ignored in the western media because it's an inconvenient talking point. Jewish leaders regularly talk about the Palestinians as inhuman and you only hear those narratives on less popular news sources and youtube channels, where every major news outlet will tell you Hamas wants to kill all Jews. Much of the US media stands in disbelief as to why the younger generation does not support Israel... This media ignores the Palestinians' living conditions because of their possibly unrecognized pro-Israeli bias and instead of seeing October 7th as a military attack in the setting of an ongoing occupation, they see it as a terrorist attack stemming from antisemitism instead of a people fighting for their lives and future. The younger generation in the US simply does not share the same sympathy for Israel and they are more informed about the Palestinians than previous generations. The fundamental problem is that Israel is and has the goal of being an ethnostate, but controls the fate of many people outside their ethnicity in their greater region. No person can objectively examine the situation and not conclude it's an apartheid state because those living in Gaza and the West Bank simply never have the chance for the same freedom and future opportunities that those living in Israel do. And there are a lot of them... soon Israel will control the lives of more Arabs than Jews. It's not a situation akin to 19th century or even current day United States where the native population makes up an inconsequential percentage of the overall population. Israel, however, cannot give these people equal rights because it would then no longer be a Jewish majority state. It also feels it cannot allow a two-state solution for security reasons. So the only available option is then ethnic cleansing of some way or another, which is horrific and anti-American. I hope someway the media wakes up to this reality and the American government uses its resources to attempt to change Israel's behavior. It's a myth that Israel's military or economy would fall apart without US support, it wouldn't, but it certainly would be damaged. However, more importantly, Israel would no longer have an unconditional ally on the world stage and may have to adjust its behavior because of international pressure as South Africa did. For Israel's sake, I hope that does happen, because it's walking into a history it may overwhelmingly regret in the distant future.

https://www.theverge.com/news/737757/apple-president-donald-trump-ceo-tim-cook-glass-corningEzra Klein and another guest were on the Brian Lehrer show (WNYC) this morning discussing how they think the left can go too far and needs to compromise to accomplish things. On the website it says that they are arguing that "limits placed by past generations to protect jobs and the environment are preventing solving shortages today." While I wouldn't disagree or bother arguing against some things discussed, there are a few arguments I had issue with. They argue that rules and regulations prevent enough housing being built in NYC yet also point out that Manhattan has more housing and less people than in previous years. If that's the case, why are you arguing that housing scarcity is due to not enough housing being built? Building more housing would obviously put a downward pressure on housing prices, sure, but there seems to be other things at play that caused the scarcity, but they make no mention of it. Like, why bring up the conflicting information, but then not explain the cause. To add to that, a caller explained her situation in which her landlord was doing construction work in such a way as to expose her and other tenants to asbestos. Are protections from something like this the type that Klein and guest are arguing against? Unless I missed it, they didn't seem to acknowledge it at all. In addition to housing, they talked about power production and how red states like Texas are producing more clean energy than blue states like NY. They seemed to suggest that this was due to those states having laws than default to being friendly to construction... while also pointing out that those same states have politics that have been trying to shut down clean energy. One might assume that empty, flat land in the sunny southern weather might be a good reason solar and wind projects are happening there, but maybe I'm the crazy one. Once again, there were points made that I might agree with, but not mentioning how a national housing crisis, corporate buying of housing, or other factors are driving up housing costs seemed to miss the mark. Likewise, does he not think that all the environmental protections blue states have came about for a reason? Many blue states were where rapid growth and building happened, up until they got dense and harder to build in. NY once had huge defense and manufacturing industries with fewer environmental laws to get in the way. When they found out those industries were polluting the water, boom, environmental laws to protect against it. tl;dr: Just venting and seeing if anyone else found issue with a discussion on the Brian Lehrer show (WNYC) this morning in which Ezra Klein blamed things not getting done on liberal overreach.
